Your Right to Informed Consent
You must give informed consent to receive treatment or to have any confidential information about you provided to others by the agency from which you are receiving services. This is your right to consent.
In order to be able to give informed consent, you should be told about the risks, benefits and available alternatives to a course of treatment or medication. You should reasonably understand the information including the risks, benefits, available options or alternatives or other consequences. You should not be forced or pressured into a decision. The choice you make should be your decision.
This consent must either be in writing and signed by you or your legal representative or be your verbal agreement to something that is witnessed and put in writing by someone who is not treating you at the time.
If you have questions about your right to consent, contact the Office of Recipient Rights at the Detroit Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency at 313-833-2500 or The Arc of Western Wayne County at 734-729-9100.
