Your Environmental and Civil Rights

You have the right to treatment in a place that is clean and safe.  If you are receiving services from a residential program, the place where you live must have good lighting, enough heat, fresh air, hot and cold water, a bathroom with privacy, personal storage space and it should be free from unpleasant smells.

Even though you are receiving mental health services, you cannot be denied your civil rights.  You have the right to an education, the right to vote, and the right not to be discriminated against because of your:

  • age;
  • color;
  • height; or
  • national origin.

You also cannot be discriminated against because of your;

  • physical or mental disability;
  • sex;
  • religion;
  • race; or
  • weight.

As a person with a disability, your rights may be additionally protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Fair Housing Amendments Act, The Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act, The Individual's with Disabilities Education Act, The Rehabilitation Act Section 504, and the Michigan Handicapper Civil Rights Act.

If you have questions about your environmental and civil rights, contact the Office of Recipient Rights at the Detroit Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency at 313-833-2500 or The Arc of Western Wayne County at 734-729-9100.
