Losing Your Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits

You could lose your Social Security Disability Insurance or SSDI benefits for a number of reasons:

  • if you can’t be located. Always notify the Social Security Administration of a change in your address;
  • if you fail to cooperate. Always respond to any written requests for information. If you aren’t sure how to respond, contact the Social Security Administration, your attorney, or an advocate;
  • if you fail to follow prescribed treatment which might restore substantial gainful activity. For example, if a doctor prescribes a plan of physical therapy for you which might increase your ability to work and you choose not to go, you could lose your SSDI;
  • if you commit fraud;
  • if you are convicted of a crime;
  • if you increase your work activity; or
  • if your medical condition changes.

If you have questions about losing your SSDI benefits, or think you may be in jeopardy of losing them, you should contact a knowledgeable attorney or advocate. You can also call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 or visit them online at www.ssa.gov. You can also contact The Arc at 734-729-9100.
